Wallowa County Humane Society will offer an art workshop, “Drawing and Cartooning the Animals in Your Life,” 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, at the Humane Society, 103 N. River Street, Enterprise.
The workshop is free and open to all ages. Art materials will be supplied. Donations accepted.
Joseph artist Kathy Bowman will talk about her art and teach workshop participants how to use simple lines to make portraits of cats, dogs and other animals. Several animal “models” will be on hand for the workshop.
Bowman is experienced in using the clean lines of Japanese art to capture expression-rich portraits of cats, horses, birds and other creatures. Her work exudes a whimsical, wry sense of humor as well as empathy with the creature she depicts. Her art is exhibited at the Josephy Center, Arts Center East and the Audubon Society in Portland.
“Capturing the spirit of an animal in a few simple lines can be a very rewarding form of art,” Bowman said. “It’s about observing, and sort of understanding the energy and temperament of your subject.”
The Wallowa County Humane Society is planning an exhibit in the spring, which will include art from this workshop.
