COMMENTARY: I started a six-mile walk

By Sharon Sherlock
For the Chieftain

A funny thing happened on my way to completing the six-mile Wharf-to-Wharf walk in Santa Cruz, California.

A crisp morning, I started out with 14,999 new friends, and we surged forward.

By the three-mile marker, the pack had thinned considerably. All along the route, there was wonderful live music. I'd stop, listen, applaud and go forward.

As I rounded a left-hand bend where the next musical group was performing, I stubbed my toe on rough pavement, went down with all the force of my near 200 pounds, and did damage to my left knee.

I sat down on the curb and called my daughter (who was waiting to photograph me at the finish line).

She said she would come and get me, but many roads were closed, so it might be awhile.  As the still upright walkers passed me, they told me the medical teams were doing sweeps and to be patient (pun!).

Along came my counterpart, a trash picker-upper. I told her my plight, and then the medical team showed up and quickly flagged down an approaching sheriff's car.

The sheriff was cranky and reluctant to take me to the hospital, but willing to take me to meet up with my daughter.

She then drove me to Dominican Hospital, where we substituted the hospital entrance for the finish line.  Attached is the picture I promised at the end of "my race," along with another of the start.

Now I have an excuse to return next year!

I feel your pain Sharon, the last race I entered, my knee gave out and I ended up walking/hobbling the whole race, I finished 10,876 out of 10,880. I figured the other 4 must have died. As long as the race doesn't kill you, you're a winner in my book! Keep on trucking fiesty feline!
