‘Near beer’ does count, court says

100 YEARS AGO

July 28, 1910

So-called "near beer" heard its death knell sounded in Wallowa County in the case of Oregon vs. John Mitchell and John Pipes of Wallowa. Both defendants were found guilty. Alleged near beer was found to contain 5.39 percent alcohol.

The Enterprise City Council directed the recorder to notify property owners on both sides of Main Street ... to put in cement sidewalks within 60 days in accordance with city ordinance.

GROUSE - The hotel at Troy is crowded with 11 regular boarders, including the bridge men, and a number of visitors daily. Here we are looking forward to a rapid development of this part of Wallowa County.

ELK MOUNTAI N - A bouncing big boy came last Sunday to help make happy the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Wagner. ... W.D. Roberts has bought a new mowing machine. ... Mr. and Mrs. Millard McFetridge have gone to Imnaha after fruit.

70 YEARS AGO

Aug. 1, 1940

The airplane that has been flying over and near Enterprise for the last couple of weeks has been purchased by Ray Dunsmore of Wallowa, and is being flown by Art Walters. Mr. Walters is teaching Mr. Dunsmore to fly and is also taking other students. He has a school of 12 now.

WALLOWA - Fire believed to have originated in the kitchen destroyed the Charles Schaeffer home on Bear Creek Friday morning about 9 o'clock.

Pioneers gathered in force for their annual picnic and reunion yesterday at Edelweiss camp at Wallowa Lake. ... Leslie M. Scott of Portland, chief speaker, talked about the character and history of Indians of the Northwest, particularly of the Nez Perce tribe, the most progressive and intelligent in this part of the country.

Dr. Charles Ault, pioneer physician, passed away Wednesday evening, July 31, 1940, at Enterprise hospital , where he had been a patient for a few weeks. ... He moved to Enterprise in 1895 where he spent the remainder of his life.

50 YEARS AGO

July 28, 1960

The 15th annual Chief Joseph Days celebration opens with a jampacked program scheduled for the next three days. ... Bonnie Tucker, manager of the Tucker rodeo stock, said some of the top cowboys coming in are Norman Goree and Cecil Swargart, saddle bronc riders, and Darrell Hobdey, one of the top bareback riders.

Approximately 400 weary forest firefighters, who have been battling one of the worst series of fires seen in years, are getting their first real relief since lightning set thousands of acres ablaze nine days ago.

The new post office building in Joseph will be ready to move into by Aug. 1.

A fire started on upper Prairie Creek by lightning was discovered by Verne Anderson and Warren Voss, who took their chainsaws and other equipment and soon had the blaze under control. They were joined by several others, including Max Gorsline and Bob Stubblefield.

25 YEARS AGO

Aug. 1, 1985

Field crops, gardens and trees received the brunt of a late afternoon thunderstorm that swept through the valley Tuesday, dumping 1.79 inches of rain in Wallowa.

The storm touched off few fires, however, in the surrounding dry Wallowa County forests.

The economy of Wallowa County will suffer another anet loss of over $8 million if Wallowa County Forest Industries sets idle for one year, according to Arley Isley, OSU Extension agent.

An art center could be a salvation of economically depressed Wallowa Valley, according to Carol Lee Perkins, proprietor of the newest gallery in the area, Eagle Mountain Gallery, located in Wallowa Valley Mall.
