Shirley Preso

Nov. 16, 1931 –– July 6, 2018

Shirley Louise Preso, beloved wife and best friend of Joe Preso was born Shirley Rounsavell in Wallowa to Joe and Carrie Rounsavell. Shirley was the fourth of five children.

She graduated from Wallowa High School in 1949.

She married Albert Joseph Preso Sept. 3, 1955. At the time of her death, they had been married for nearly 63 years.

Shirley grew up on a farm and loved animals throughout her life. She was a skilled rider and was Queen of the Court for the Wallowa County Fair in 1948 (the predecessor of today’s Chief Joseph Days court). She worked for many years as the well-known secretary for the Delbert Pratt Insurance Agency in Enterprise until her retirement in 1981.

After her retirement, Shirley became the president of the Wallowa County Humane Society and led its efforts to take care of and find homes for countless dogs, cats, puppies and kittens for two decades.

In recent years, she greatly enjoyed spending time with her devoted husband, attended monthly meetings of her “49ers” group of Wallowa High School graduates and was a familiar sight walking her dogs on the country roads south of Enterprise.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Joe Preso; brother Jim Rounsavell and sisters Helen Berry and Barbara Lamoreaux; children Sandy Twigg, Debby Preso and Tim Preso (Karen); and granddaughter Alexandria Preso.

A private family memorial will be held. The family wishes to express appreciation for the comfort and care recently provided to Shirley by the extraordinary doctors and nurses of the Wallowa Memorial Hospital.

In lieu of gifts or flowers, the family requests that donations in Shirley’s honor be made to the Wallowa County Humane Society.
