Wallowa High School’s Lady Cougar basketball team dropped both of their games last week, both league games. The girls tumbled 92-26 against Nixyaawii and did better against Helix, losing 50-25.
Wallowa ran into the one-two punch of Nixyaawii’s starting seniors Mary Stewart and Kaitlynn Melton, who scored 47 points between them, including 11 three-pointers.
“The couldn’t miss,” said Cougar Coach Annette Moeller. “They were just shooting right over the top of our girls.”
Moeller said she spoke with Nixyaawii coach Jeremy Maddern who said his team had never shot that well in previous games.
Grace Pendarvis and Riley Ferré led scoring for the Lady Cougars with six each, Ashlyn Young added five, Shanna Ray Tillery and Jamie Johnston four each and Rylee Goller had one.
“We knew Mary and Kaitlynn were both phenomenal players,” Moeller added. “We tried up to the very end, but couldn’t buy a basket.”
Wallowa stuck close to Helix in the first half.
“We came out flat in the second half,” Moeller said. “We had our share of second and third shots, but nothing was falling.”
Wallowa’s first half was also aided when one of Helix’s starters picked up three quick fouls and was benched.
“She came back and didn’t have one foul in the second half,” Moeller added.
