Wallowa County literally is at the end of the road because State Highway 82 ends at Wallowa Lake.
The drive to Wallowa County is one of the state's most scenic, and there are several reasons to make a brief stop along the way.
One of eastern Oregon's few wineries is Gilstrap Brothers Winery in Cove. Known for reds and whites made from local grapes, the winery offers wine tastings and tours by appointment. For information: 541-568-4646 or www.gilstrapbrothers.com .
To reach the winery, take State Highway 237 from La Grande and turn left on Antles Lane. To resume your trip, take Lower Cove Road and follow the signs to Highway 82 and turn right.
Before you get to Wallowa County, you'll pass through Elgin, where you can view the parked passenger trains of Wallowa Union Railroad and stop if necessary for a snack.
Just inside the Wallowa County line is the tiny town of Minam, with a small state park offering camping plus a fine spot to launch a raft on the Wallowa and Grande Ronde rivers.
