The celebration begins on the main street of Wallowa where an old-fashioned small town parade regularly packs them three deep along the sidewalks. Wallowa is a great place for a picnic in the park, and an annual barbecue hosted by Wallowa churches and other organizations makes that easy for visitors. A softball tournament during the weekend is also a tradition. Families often make a day of it by driving a few miles further down the highway to Lostine for the annual Flea Market where vendors offer western goods, jewelry, antiques, collectibles, plants and more. There are plenty of food vendors at that event, as well. Proceeds from the flea market support Lostine's city park and fire department. At dusk people begin gathering along Wallowa Lake for the annual Fireworks celebration. The lake is a beautiful setting for the fireworks, which will be reflected in the water and the Wallowa County Park area at the foot of the lake is a good place to set up the lawn chairs in advance.
