Health Tip of the Week: Alcoholism facts

• Nearly one-half of alcoholics are women

• Children of alcoholics are two to four times more likely to become alcoholics than children of non-alcoholics

• Alcoholism is a disease; alcoholics have different body chemistry than non-alcoholics

• Some alcoholics drink only beer or wine; just because someone doesn't drink hard liquor doesn't mean they don't have a problem

• Untreated alcoholism is often fatal; causes include cirrhosis of the liver, heart disease, gastrointestinal bleeding, drunken-driving accidents and suicide.
