There are countless ways to spend a day at Wallowa Lake, including an all-day hike, via several trail heads near the lake, into the Eagle Cap Wilderness.
A family can easily spend a leisurely vacation day without ever leaving the immediate vicinity of the lake, however.
Here are just a few activities to fill a day in the Wallowa Lake community:
Go fishing. Bring along your fishing poles, rent a boat at the Wallowa Lake Marina and go after the lake's trout, record kokonee or makinaw. Tackle and bait is available at the marina.
Treat yourself to a mountain-sized breakfast. Pancakes and eggs cooked on your own Coleman stove at a Wallowa Lake State Park camp site, or going out to one of the lakes' fine restaurants, such as Glacier Grill (which also has a general store) or Wallowa Lake Lodge.
Travel up the side of Mount Howard on a don't-miss excursion on Wallowa Lake Tramway, the steepest four-person gondola in North America. There are spectacular views on top and two miles of developed trails lead to outlooks from which you can see three states on a clear day. Summit Grill on top is easily Wallowa County's highest eatery at 8,150-feet. Be sure to bring your camera.
Depending on how long you dawdle on Mount Howard, there should still be enough time in the day to treat the whole family to some fun. There's a go-cart track, bumper boats, arcade games, two miniature golf courses, horse rentals (from one hour to week-long outings) at Eagle Cap Wilderness Pack Station, and bicycle rentals. Several gift shop are fun to browse and pick up Wallowa Lake souvenirs.
Night falls fairly early at the head of Wallowa Lake because of the mountains looming close, but there's still plenty of sky overhead for star counting in the clear mountain air.
Enjoy your day at Wallowa Lake.
