Hells Canyon National Recreation Area Ranger, Kendall Clark, is initiating a 30-day public review and comment period for the Environmental Assessment of the Lick Creek Bridge Replacement Project on the Hells Canyon NRA.

Scheduled for implementation is the summer of 2003, the proposal involves the following activities: replacing the existing Lick Creek Bridge with a wider, longer span concrete bridge; installing railings on the bridge and bridge approach; add reinforced curbs to the bridge; construct a temporary bypass, including installation of a temporary bridge of Lick Creek, alongside the existing bridge to allow continuation of vehicle traffic on Forest Road 39; reconstruct the Lick Creek Campground road entrance to improve intersection alignment and create one point-of-entry; import fill material needed for construction from the Nesbit rock pit; disposal of old concrete abutments and old timber elements at a location outside National Forest System land; disposal of asphalt and extra rock and soil at the Wayside or Nesbit rock pits, or at locations outside National Forest System land; plant shrubs in disturbed areas along stream banks and newly formed road banks for stabilization; and replacing a cross drain pipe and waterline underneath Forest Road 39.The project area is in the vicinity of Lick Creek Campground, located where the Wallowa Mountain Loop Road (Forest Road 39) crosses Lick Creek in portions of Township 5 South, Range 46 East; Willamette Meridian.
