Charles Edward Heard, former publisher of the Joseph Herald, passed away at his home in Milton-Freewater on Dec. 13, 2001, just ten days short of his 98th birthday.

Robert Charles Sturm, of Puyallup, Wash., passed away at home on Jan. 2, 2002 at the age of 53.

Marie Thelma Grossnickle, of Enterprise, passed away Jan. 6, 2002, at the age of 89.

Perry Witherspoon, 96, of Elgin, passed away Jan. 5, 2002, in La Grande.

Verne Hescock died Jan.10, 2002,of age related causes, at the age of 90. Vern was born Aug. 30, 1911, in Promise to Ward and Annie Swearingen Hescock.

Lois Doud, 77, of Wallowa, died Jan. 15, 2002, in Spokane.

Billie V. Prince of Wallowa passed away Jan. 10, 2002, at Wallowa Memorial Hospital. He was born in 1932 in Wallowa to Wayne and Sadie Horton Prince.

Mary Lee Hay, 73, of Enterprise, died Jan. 19, 2002, in Walla Walla, Wash.

Mildred L. Yeoman, 78, of Enterprise, died Jan. 25, 2002, at the Wallowa Valley Care Center in Enterprise.

Ora Dell Berry, 95, of Wallowa, died at the Wallowa Valley Care Center in Enterprise on Jan. 30, 2002. She was born in Wallowa in 1906.

Eldon Floyd "Bill" Cool, died at the age of 92, on Jan. 29, 2002, at the Wallowa Valley Care Center. He was a Wallowa County resident since 1940.

Delbert A. Quesenberry, 83, of Pendleton, formerly of Enterprise, died Feb. 2, 2002.

Pearl T. Finney, 97, of Enterprise died Feb. 9, 2002, at the Wallowa Valley Care Center in Enterprise.

Robert "Bob" F. Womack, 75, of Wallowa, died Feb. 4, 2002, at his home. He was born in 1926 in Wallowa to William and Nellie (Pack) Womack.

Laurel Wreath (Marks) Locke of Portland passed away Feb. 4, 2002, at the age of 82. She was born in Imnaha in 1919.

Lena Promise Carper Benthin, 89, of La Grande, died Feb. 8, 2002, at her home. She was born in Promise to Alfred and Promise Carper.

Milo Puderbaugh, 77, an Enterprise native, passed away Feb. 8, 2002, at Wallowa Memorial Hospital. He was born in 1924 to Ethel Conrad and W.T. Puderbaugh.

M. David "Rody" Rodakowski, 51, died on Feb. 10, 2002 of a cerebral aneurysm. He lived in Enterprise since 1980.

Juliane Danilovich, 83, of Union and formerly of La Grande, died Feb. 9, 2002.

Laurel Wreath (Marks) Locke, 83, of Portland died on Jan. 31, 2002. She was born in Imnaha and was a graduate of Enterprise High School.

Fern Wolfe, 77, of Wallowa, died Feb. 18, 2002, in Boise. She was born in Enterprise to John and Alta Stein.

Esther Lampkins, 104, of Enterprise, died Feb. 19, 2002, at the Wallowa Valley Care Center. She was born in 1898 in Flora to Andrew and Francis A. (Matthew) Forbes.

James A. Stubblefield passed away on Feb. 22, 2002. Jim was born in Enterprise in 1930 and lived in Wallowa County his entire life.

James R. Gallagher, 65, of Los Angeles, Calif., died Jan. 8, 2002, at his home.

Jack J. Kreizenbeck, 80, long-time Wallowa County resident and businessman, died Feb. 26, 2002, in Portland.

Vern Harvey Baker, of Albany died Feb. 24, 2002, at his home.

George Wayne Alford, 80, of Joseph, passed away Feb. 27, 2002, at Wallowa Memorial Hospital in Enterprise. George moved to Wallowa County in 1925.

AnaLe Thompson Clark died Jan. 10, 2002. She was born March 3, 1912, to Ed and Dora (McCubbin) Thompson of Wallowa.

Agnes Wagner, 86, died March 2, 2002. She was born in 1915 in Enterprise to William and Bertha Stein

Darold "Red" Doud passed away at his home in Baker City on March 8, 2002. He was born in Promise to Ira Lorenzo and Nellie Angie Williams Doud in 1940.

Maurine Roberts, 80, died March 12, 2002, in Walla Walla. She was born in Wallowa in 1921 to Neal And Della Crader Baker.

Ruth W. Richman, 92, a retired Wallowa County teacher and former Troy resident, passed away March 11, 2002, in Clarkston, Wash.

June McManus Brown, resident of La Grande from 1930 to 1972, passed away on March 15, 2002, in Joseph at the age of 90.

Iva Mae Deckard Clark passed away Feb. 12, 2002, in Boise, Idaho. She moved to Enterprise with her husband Wayne in the 1970's.

Victor Irvin Cronin, 85, formerly of Enterprise, died March 14, 2002, at the Grande Ronde Hospital.

Eileen Marie "Mike" Chitty, 79, died March 14, 2002 in Klamath Falls. She lived in Enterprise briefly.

Frances Elizabeth Goyen, 92, of Elgin, died March 25, 2002 in La Grande.

Jay Clyde Hockett passed away March 28, 2002, in Portland. He and his twin brother, Ray, were born May 2, 1914, to Dr. Clyde T. and Louie Wade Hockett.

Susie L. Lewis of Imnaha, daughter of pioneers Frank and Olive Pearson died April 6, 2002, in La Grande, at the age of 86.

Edith A. Snyder of Weston, died April 1, 2002, at the age of 91.

Jo Ann Witherrite Haslam Banks of Portland, a former Wallowa resident, died April 2, 2002, at the age of 76.

Mary Louise Muse Isley, 77, died May 8, 2002 in Salem.

Clyde James Nobles, 87, Enterprise native and longtime Hermiston resident, died May 15, 2002, in Hermiston.

Thomas J. "Tom" Snyder, 77, died May 16, 2002, at Wallowa Memorial Hospital in Enterprise.

Wallowa native Ivy Janet Schaeffer Isaacson, 80, who at the age of 16 was the youngest licensed guide in Oregon, died May 21, 200,2 in Clarkston, Wash., due to complications of diabetes.

Mark Benjamin Marks, 85, of Enterprise, died June 3, 2002, at Wallowa Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. He served as Enterprise City Police Chief 1953-55, and as Wallowa County Sheriff from 1955-1971.

Clara Rebecca Jones, 86, died June 2, 2002, at the Wallowa Valley Care Center in Enterprise. Prior to he retirement, Mrs. Jones was a much loved school bus driver in Chico, Calif.

Martha Ellen Crow Locke, 89, of Lostine died June 3, 2002, in Joseph and was buried June 7, 2002 at the Lostine Cemetery.

Ulysses Verine Fairchild, 88, who was born and spent most of his life in Joseph, died May 29, 2002.

Benneta Foster, 85, former Wallowa County resident, died in Oregon City May 27, 2002.

June McManus Brown, 97, died March 15, 2002, and her memorial service was scheduled for June 29, 2002.

Frances E. Zollman Edgar, 75, longtime resident of the Tri-Cities, WA, died June 11, 2002.

The memorial service for June Brown, 91, who died March 15, 2002, will be held June 29, 2002.

Isabel Johnson Musum, 88, died in La Grande July 1, 2002, and will be buried in Wallowa.

Arvella L. Fordice, 92, longtime resident of the Flora area, died June 17, 2002.

Cheryl Starmer, 57, of Wallowa and formerly of Springfield, died June 15, 2002, from cancer.

Betty Mays Botts, 79, of Joseph, died June 30, 2002. She graduated as salutatorian from Joseph High School in 1941.

Floyd Marcum, 95, former longtime resident of Wallowa County, died July 2, 2002 in Silverton.

Azalee Luthia Bennett Hockett, 88, died at Wallowa Memorial Hospital July 9, 2002.

Merle Zollman of Lostine died July 15, 2002.

Edith Bell Warnock Brown, 92, of Clarkston, Idaho, and formerly of Enterprise, died July 5, 2002, in Clarkston.

Stanwood "Cub" William Begley, 91, former longtime Wallowa County Assessor, died July 11, 2002, in Portland.

Ruth Mary Cole Pollock, 84, died July 10, 2002.

Florence Stickler, 90, of Portland and recently of Walla Walla, Wash., died July 13, 2002. She was born and raised in the Lower Wallowa Valley until her marriage in 1939 to Raymond C. Stickler.

Flora Alice James, 82, of Enterprise, died July 19, 2002 in Spokane, Wash.

Myrle D. Zollman, 88, of Joseph, died July 15, 2002. Although born in Missouri, he spent most of his like as a Wallowa County resident.

Oliver "Harold" Wishart, 80, of Enterprise, died July 16, 2002. After moving here from southern Oregon in 1977, he and sons Gary and Larry opened the county's first pizza parlor.

Edward Conrad, 77, died July 15, 2002, in Portland.

Robert "Bob" Ernest Ferrell, 84, of Enterprise died July 31, 2002. Over the years he worked for various different First National Bank of Oregon branches, ending up in Enterprise in 1960 as manager until his retirement in 1974.

Frederick Cornelius, 66, of Enterprise died Aug. 3, 2002.

Opal A. Dix, 83, died August 1, 2002, at home in Milton-Freewater. She was a former Enterprise resident.

Burton B. Burkhart, 83, of Joseph, died August 9, 2002.

Slim Bronson, 92, of Imnaha, died August 11, 2002 at home. He was a former City of Enterprise policeman and Wallowa County Sheriff's deputy.

Wingert Craig Walker, 57, died August 5, 2002 at home in Newberg. He was born in Enterprise in 1945.

Kenneth MacKenzie Craig, 75, of Woodburn, died Aug. 9, 2002. He was born and raised in Wallowa County.

Bonnie Sterling Mishler, 85, died Aug. 14, 2002, in McMinnville. She lived in Wallowa County much of her life, working for the Forest Service and as a pack guide in Hells Canyon.

Ruth Dressler died in Portland on Aug. 14, 2002. Born in a log home on Alder Slope, she lived in Wallowa County off and on most of her life.

Rosemary Mitchell, 90, died Aug. 17, 2002, at the Foster Care Center in La Grande.

Maxine Fisk, 80, died Aug. 19, 2002, at St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland.

Barbara Trump, 77, of Wallowa, died Aug. 18, 2002. As a young woman she helped her family run cabins at Wallowa Lake and led pack strings into the mountains for tourists.

Leonard William "Pud" Collins, 83, of Elgin, died August 26, 2002, in La Grande. He was born and raised in the Powwatka area.

Vernon Eldon Hawley, 82, of Enterprise, died August 28, 2002. He was an Enterprise City policeman for 14 years.

Tina Locken, 41, of Enterprise, died Aug. 28, 2002, due to complication from leukemia.

Hubert Crow, 67, of Wallowa, died Aug. 29, 2002. He moved here from Arizona at the age of ten and spent the rest of his life here.

Jennie Lou Blanchet, 74, of Pendleton, died Aug. 28, 2002, at her ranch home. She was the mother of Elane Dickenson, Chieftain reporter.

Evelyn Sylvia Lathrop, 87, of Walla Walla, Wash., but formerly of Lostine, died Sept. 5, 2002, in Walla Walla.

Dollie Ilene Jewell, 67, formerly of Wallowa County and a resident of Juneau, Alaska, died Sept. 3, 2002.

Henry Newton "Newt" Ashby, 80, livelong resident of Union and Wallowa counties, died Sept. 4, 2002.

Gary Fredrick Marks, 63, of Joseph, died Aug. 30, 2002. He worked as a lawyer and farmer in the local area most of his life.

Vivian Ruby Trezona, 81, of Enterprise, died Sept. 1, 2002. She lived in the area all her life.

Gordon McGinnis, 94, died recently in Seattle, Wash. He was raised in Wallowa County and always considered it home even though he didn't live here.

Isabel Cramer Bright, 89, of Longview, Wash., died Aug. 16, 2002. She was a lifelong resident of Wallowa County until two years ago.

Anna Kathleen "Katy" Gentle, of Wallowa, died Sept. 12, 2002, after a long illness.

Margaret Dobbin, 97, of Albuquerque, N. M., died Sept. 7, 2002. She was born and raised on the Dobbin Ranch along Prairie Creek between Joseph and Enterprise.

M. Lorraine Schaeffer, 75, of Wallowa, died Sept. 13, 2002, after a long battle with multiple sclerosis and COPD.

Gayle Stockdale, 83, former Enterprise and Clarkston, Wash. resident, died Sept. 29, 2002 in Olympia, Wash. He was known for his horse training and riding instructions.

Floyd "Red" Scott, 86, died Oct. 4, 2002 in Sweet Home. He was born and raised in the Joseph area.

Karen Volkert, 59, of Enterprise, died Oct. 7, 2002, after a long battle with cancer.

Sheri Botts Rosenbaum, 40, of Kennewick, Wash., died Oct. 8, 2002, in an industrial accident. She was a graduate of EHS.

John Stearns, 90, died Oct. 18, 2002, in Topeka, Kansas. He was a designer/builder and developer in California and Oregon and will have his ashes interred in Oregon.

Meleese Cook, 74, of Enterprise, died Sept. 15, 2002 in Boise, Idaho.

Doria Louis Audet, 76, of Nyssa and formerly an Enterprise rancher, died Oct. 10, 2002, in Ontario.

Everett "Dale" Riggs, 74, died Nov. 1, 2002 in Hermiston.

Robert "Bob" E. Anderson, 77, of Milton-Freewater, died Oct. 27, 2002, at home. He had formerly been a loan officer for Bank of Wallowa County (now Community Bank).

George E. Robinson, 86, of Eugene, died recently due to complications from Alzheimer's disease. He was a 1934 graduate of EHS.

William A. Bales, 85, of Joseph, died Nov. 1, 2002 in La Grande. He first retired after working as a mechanic and retired for a second time at the age of 81 as manager of the Wallowa County Landfill.

Winifred Mary English, 74, died Nov. 3, 2002, In Boise, Idaho. Services were held in Wallowa.

Kenneth Carmony, 75, died unexpectedly Nov. 2, 2002, at home in Gresham.

Rena Freels, 78, of Enterprise and lifelong Wallowa County resident, died Nov. 15, 2002.

Barbara DuPratt of Bakersfield, Calif., died Nov. 11, 2002, after a long illness. She and her husband, James, operated a cattle ranch on the upper Imnaha during the '60's and '70's.

Alton B. Cole, 90, died Nov. 7, 2002 in Escondido, Calif. He was born in a log cabin on Lost Prairie and lived in the area until 1940.

Verne Russell, 82, of Joseph, died Nov. 20, 2002. His 45-year career as a Wallowa County employee culminated in being the director of public works, as well as county surveyor.

Leora Fae Leigh, 100, of Moscow, Idaho, died Oct. 25, 2002. Prior to her death, she was the oldest living graduate of Wallowa High School.

Thorsten "Tory" Shell, 93, of Palm Springs, Calif., and formerly of Wallowa, died Sept. 27, 2002.

Robert "Bill" Crow, 64, of Maybank, Texas, and formerly of Wallowa, died Nov. 21, 2002.

Helen Barber, 87, died Nov. 28, 2002.

Walter Shea Capdeville, 17, of Enterprise, died of unknown causes Nov. 27, 2002.

Bernice Astwood, 96, of Orem, Utah, but formerly of Enterprise, died Dec. 3, 2002.

Virginia Sannar, 88, of Irrigon but formerly of Wallowa County, died Dec. 2, 2002. She was the first queen mother (chaperone) for Chief Joseph Days.

Mildred Holloran, 94, of Kalispell, Mont., died Nov. 19, 2002. Her husband, James, was killed in a logging accident in the county in 1956.

H. Ava Gregory, 82, longtime La Grande resident, died Nov. 30, 2002.

Vivian Hovis, 94, of La Grande but formerly of Joseph, died Nov. 25, 2002.

Delbert L. Lewis, 82, of Lincoln, Neb., and owner of the Lucky Diamond Ranch in Wallowa County, died Nov. 28, 2002.

Robert Scott Gardner, 36, of Sanford, Fla., died Oct. 15, 2002, after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Enterprise.

Treiva Leu Carter, 50, died at her family ranch in Long Creek Dec. 8, 2002. She was a teacher and coach in Long Creek, Enterprise, Pendleton and Hermiston.

Frank Weatherford, 49, of Enterprise, died Dec. 9, 2002.

Janice Magden, 86, of Lewiston, Idaho, died Dec. 6, 2002. She worked as a nurse for the Wallowa County Health Department for many years.

Erwin Hafenstein, 72, of Klamath Falls, died Oct. 15, 2002. During his career working for the Forest Service he was stationed in Enterprise for a time.

Vivian Lorren, 94, of Auburn, Wash., formerly of Joseph, died Dec. 13, 2002.

Joyce Cummings, 86, of Walla Walla, died Dec. 7, 2002. She was an EHS gradate.
