A late-night fire of undetermined cause destroyed part of a home’s attic on Alder Slope.

Joseph Fire Department was the first-response agency to the blaze in the only home on Pine Tree Road at the Langston Road intersection. The Enterprise Fire Department joined the battle.

According to EFD chief Paul Karvoski, a passer-by initially reported the fire around 11:45 p.m. after spotting flames above a small porch. Karvoski said the overall structure includes two separate living areas that are adjoining, and the fire was located in the smaller of the two.

For the most part, damage was limited to the smaller unit’s attic and its front porch. Karvoski estimated the cost at $75,000 to $100,000.

He said Joseph’s department brought one engine, two water tenders and one rescue vehicle to the fire, and EFD brought two engines, one tender and one rescue vehicle. The departments’ combined response included approximately two dozen firefighters.

JFD remained on scene until nearly 4 a.m.

Karvoski said an investigation later by the state fire marshal could not determine the fire’s cause.
