The Wallowa County Chess club is sponsoring free chess lessons for beginners. These will be held four consecutive Saturdays – Oct. 6, 13, 20 and 27 – from 12 to 2 p.m. at the new Josephy Center for Arts and Culture, 403 Main St. in Joseph.

Beginners of all ages are welcome. Parents and children can come and learn together; children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Instructor Clem Falbo is a member of the US Chess Federation.

The upcoming sequence of lessons:

Oct. 6: How the game pieces move and rules of the game.

Oct. 13: Beginning chess tactics.

Oct. 20: Strategies – attack and defense.

Oct. 27: Use of chess notation and chess clocks.

The Wallowa County Chess Club meets on Thursdays from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Josephy Center. Players of all levels are welcome to come any time between those hours and play chess for enjoyment, competition and to increase their chess skills.
