Wallowa High School junior Michele Phillips received permission from the Wallowa school board to graduate with her classmates in June 2004 as long as she completes her graduation requirements before joining the U.S. Marine Corps in November. Wallowa school policy normally dictates that a student can only graduate with his or her class if they attend the final nine weeks of school at WHS.

Such was one decision made at the board's regularly scheduled Jan. 13 meeting.

In other business the board accepted the retirement resignation, effective at the end of the school year, of long time kindergarten teacher Carol Mock, knowing that they intend to hire her back in a half time position next fall. Mock is a veteran of 33 years of teaching in the school district, and the advantage to District #12 is that they will significantly reduce her salary and will no longer have to pay out Public Employee Retirement System benefits.
