Some $40.7 million in federal funds are available for National Scenic Byway development. The Federal Highway Administration has received nearly $90 million in applications. That is what Alice Trindle, Hells Canyon Scenic Byway Committee (HCSBC) director, learned at a recent national meeting for Scenic Byway committees in La Grande.

The numerous members of the HCSBC, however, remain optimistic about their chances of getting their share of the pot. They've asked for just $252,000 of those funds to continue the long-term project of making the 218-mile Hells Canyon Scenic Byway a tourist destination.
