The Eagle Cap Chalets' deli is smokin'.

Especially since Sharri Currie's Holy Smokes barbecue sandwich and custom meat smoking business has expanded from Joseph to Wallowa Lake.

Holy Smokes business manager Toni Leech said the move has prompted Currie to hire four more workers to fully staff the two sites.

"Eagle Cap Chalets approached us about taking over their deli," Leech said. "We had been doing some catering through the winter and even catered their Christmas party. They wanted to end running their deli service and offered it to us."

Leech said response to the Chalets' deli operation has been good so far, with people enjoying the new smoked chicken caesar salad. She and Currie worked with Wallowa County Business Facilitator Myron Kirkpatrick to set up a business plan that would work for them.

"That helped us a lot," Leech said of the free services of Kirkpatrick's office. "Myron was really helpful on local issues that affect running a business in Wallowa County. He's a tremendous resource."

The Holy Smokes barbecue sandwich stand in Joseph remains open Thursday through Sunday each week. The deli at Eagle Cap Chalets is open daily from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
