The Wallowa County Health Care District, which includes Wallowa Memorial Hospital and the Wallowa Valley Care Center, took another step toward becoming debt-free Monday when the board voted to pay off an additional $385,000 on its long term debt to Community Bank. The $385,000 amounts to one half of the debt load to the bank; the plan is to pay off the remainder in December.

Paying off half of the debt early will save the district $3,000 in interest payments.

It was important that necessary purchases of equipment were not hindered because of the decision, which was the reason the board voted to reduce the debt by half instead of paying off the entire debt Monday.
