A horrific head-on accident that took place 7 a.m. Sunday morning, March 15, on Interstate 84 near Pendleton has landed one man in jail.
The Umatilla Tribal Police department reported Monday, March 16, that of the five people injured in the crash, only one remained in the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The accident was caused by Eric Louis Broncheau, 20, of Pendleton, who was traveling the wrong way on Interstate 84. According to investigators from the Oregon State Police and the Umatilla Tribal Police, Broncheau was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes in his 2000 Pontiac Grand Am when he encountered a westbound commercial truck near mile post 215. The truck was able to swerve onto the shoulder to miss Broncheau, but a 1988 Ford Mustang driven by Maria Delgadillo, 28, of Texas, that was following the commercial truck was unable to swerve far enough to get out of Broncheau's way. Delgadillo's vehicle also carried three passengers, Juan Orta, 30, Tacon Rios, 26 and Agua Mendoza, 8, all of Texas. Drivers and passengers from both cars were initially transported to St. Anthony's Hospital in Pendleton.
Broncheau was charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants.
