Inland Northwest Musicians, which includes several Wallowa County musicians, will perform a free concert featuring Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony Sunday, Feb. 17, at Joseph High School gym.

The orchestra will also play an arrangement “Theme and Variations on Simple Gifts” by contemporary composer Lawrence Groupé.

A reception will be held after the concert with finger foods provided by the Wallowa Valley Orchestra.

The “Simple Gifts” music came to the orchestra by a long investigation, starting with a favorite CD that music director and conductor R. Lee Friese heard many times and wanted to perform.

It took an investigative team to locate Groupé who now resides in Los Angeles, Calif. Groupé, at Friese’s request rewrote the “Variations” and it was first performed in its world premiere by INWM in December, 2006.

The Wallowa County concert will be the second in two days for the orchestra, as it is scheduled to also perform at Hermiston High School Feb. 16.

Another feature of note in the INWM concert offering is the long commute of first bassoonist, Jill Jespersen, formerly of Hermiston, who has returned to perform this concert from Pueblo, Colo, where she moved last year.
