It will be no surprise to Wallowa County residents who shivered through the recent cold spell that a 100-year-old record for coldness was tied one day this month.
Even though the weather turned within the past week from cold, sleet and snow into clear skies and warm temperatures, the chilly memory lingers.
The record was set Tuesday, June 10, when the maximum high temperature registered for Joseph tied in the "extreme" chart posted online by the National Weather Service for the coldest maximum temperature ever in June. That record - 42 degrees Fahrenheit for the day's high - was first set on June 3, 1908.
The third highest daily average for June - 37 degrees F. - was also set June 10. The top two averages for the month were 34.5 degrees on June 5, 1914, and 35.5 on June 15, 1895.
The National Weather Service chart actually sets the coldest day as June 11 rather than June 10 because the temperatures are read at the Joseph weather station each morning, and many of the extremes for a certain date set are actually registered the previous day.
The average temperature for the first 12 days of the month was only 56.6 degrees, which compared unfavorably with May's average of 59.4 degrees.
Things have, of course, warmed up since the dismal start of June.
As of Tuesday, June 17, the average maximum temperature for the month had improved to a still less-than-sizzling 60.6 degrees. The highest official temperature for June was 75 degrees, registered on June 16.
