The Jonathan M. Wainwright Memorial VA Medical Center in Walla Walla, Wash., announced this week the recent receipt of approval from the Department of Veterans Affairs Central Office to locate a Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) in La Grande, Oregon.

In order to establish the "best location," information analyzed included veteran population and veteran enrollees in a five-county area in Northeast Oregon.

Distances and highway accessibility were also considered.

The counties in this geographic area, including Wallowa County, are all designated as rural to highly rural. La Grande is approximately 84 miles from the Walla Walla VA Medical Center.

Services to be provided at this clinic include primary care and primary mental health as well as group clinics, such as PTSD, diabetic and hypertension clinics.

Under the direction of VA Northwest Network Director Dennis M. Lewis, the facility has initiated a search in the La Grande community for suitable space. Upon activation, the new CBOC will serve approximately 1,700 enrolled veterans; at full capacity; the clinic is expected to serve over 2,200 veterans.

An opening date has not yet been determined.
