WALLOWA – The absence of the popular hay maze, according to Community Connection of Enterprise Assistant Manager Jeanette Johnson, was a contributing factor to decreased attendance and decreased earnings at the Third Annual Harvest Fest held at the Tamkaliks grounds in Wallowa last Saturday.
Attendance dropped from 500 patrons in 2013 to 350 Saturday, said Johnson, adding that money raised for the Meals-On-Wheels Program during the Community Connection-sponsored event fell as well, from $1,744 in 2013 to $1,130 last weekend.
The absence of the hay maze was not an oversight, but instead a backlash from acts of vandalism that occurred one year ago when persons came on site following the Second Annual Harvest Fest and before the on-loan hay bales were retrieved. During that interim, said Johnson, strings on many of the bales were cut and bottles were inserted in the hay.
Johnson says the maze will return next year with chances of repeat vandalism limited by a group of Boy Scouts who have volunteered to camp on the premises following the 2015 event.
Temperamental weather with some showers punctuated the six-hour fund-raiser where nine vendors set up stands, with all or some of their proceeds donated to Meals-On-Wheels.
Also featured at the colorful event where orange pumpkins were sold and a Bounce House was inflated to entertain the younger set, were horse-drawn wagon rides provided by Randy and Kathy Vernam; horse rides by Jill Mallory; a cook shack by the Marr Flat Cattle Company; music supplied by Soul Renovation; a mobile Humane Society trailer; and games.
Popular throughout the day was a roving petting zoo where Marlene Zollman toured the grounds with two goats and a giant, black Great Dane named Koda. Kids of all ages regularly were thrilled and hugged the Nubian goat Moriah, the Nigerian Dwarf goat Sweet Pea, and the jet-black Kody.
