County’s first Thai food

Elane Dickenson/Chieftain Chourirath “Julie” Naknakhone of Wallowa, above, opened Wallowa County's first Thai eatery this summer in the form of her Khao Neaow Food Cart at Wallowa Lake, located just past Eagle Cap Pack Station. She said she will remain open until other seasonal lake businesses close down in September, and indicated she has done a thriving business for visitors and locals hungry for Thai food. Naknakhone said she is a native of Laos who also spent time in Thailand before coming to the United States 33 years ago; she is now proud to be a U.S. citizen. She has lived in rural Wallowa for about two years, and operated a restaurant, Bankok East, in La Grande last year, but said “It was too far to drive, I like living here.” After the summer season she plans to help a cousin who just opened a Thai restaurant in Enterprise, indicating Thai food is here to stay in Wallowa County.
