‘Stem Afternoon’ planned Jan. 26

Family fun and science are on the agenda for a Stem Afternoon event Friday, Jan. 27 at Building Healthy Families, 207 NW Park St., Enterprise. The event includes prizes, a snack and variety of fun hands-on science stations exploring robotics, physics, biology and the Olympic sport of curling.

EOU Stem Hub and Wallowa Resources are co-sponsors.

MS Chapter may form in county

The Oregon Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society is surveying county residents to determine interest in forming an MS Self-Help Group.

Four short questions are included in the survey.

Fundraiser for scholarships set

Wallowa County Fair Board will host its third-annual all-you-can-eat pancake and bingo fundraiser 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, at Cloverleaf Hall on the campus of Wallowa County Fairgrounds in Enterprise.

Dinner begins at 5:30 p.m., bingo at 6 p.m. Dinner includes pancakes, sausage, coffee, juice and a free bingo card. $10 for adults, $5 for children 10 and under. There will also be a silent auction. Proceeds benefit Wallowa County youth.

Parent Café opens for 2018

Networking and conversation about parents accompanies with a free lunch is offered through the Building Healthy Families Parent Café Wednesdays, beginning Jan. 18.

Building Healthy Families and community partners are on hand to host the discussions regarding child care and other topics that help parents connect.

The sessions are at 207 NW Park St., Enterprise. Free.

Fishtrap lands two grant awards

The Oregon Arts Commission has cut Fishtrap two checks recently. A general support grant from the Learning Grants division of $11,306 will help expand youth labs that include K-8 Fishtrap Storylab; 2018 Summer Fishtrap, which will include a Youth Workshop led by educators Cameron Scott and Mosley Wotta; and youth participation in The Big Read.

“Our goal is to reach every kid in the county,” said Shannon McNerney, executive director of Fishtrap.

Fishtrap also received $7,000 in support of The Big Read, which regularly brings in guest speakers, films and other events to vitalize the reading of a good book.

This year’s Big Read begins Feb. 22. The book for 2018 is the post apocalyptic “Station 11” by Emily St. John Mandel. Copies of the book are available at The Bookloft in Enterprise.

Pesticide session planned Feb. 22

OSU Extension Service will offer a Northeast Oregon Private Pesticide Applicator Pre-Exam Training session 9:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22 at Wallowa County Fair Grounds,

668 NW 1st St., Enterprise.

The session is designed for those preparing to take a private pesticide applicator license or laws and safety exam. Topics include laws and regulations, math for applicators, pesticide labels, toxicity and safety.
