Lt. Col. Wiedeman retires from USMC

Lt. Col. Byron Wiedeman, a San Diego, Calif., resident who has close ties to Wallowa County, recently retired from active duty in the United States Marine Corps. He was honored in a retirement parade held March 1 at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego.

Lt. Col. Wiedeman, 42, a Corvallis native, is a nephew of Enterprise’s Mike Wiedeman and spent considerable time in Wallowa County while growing up and in his young adult years. He worked in logging here with his relatives.

A 1989 graduate of Marshfield High School in Coos Bay, he went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in political science from Oregon State University in 1993. That same year he was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the USMC.

His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (with Gold Star), Navy Achievement Medal, and Air Medal (“5” Strike/Flight awards).

He is married to the former Susanne Plahuta of Milwaukee, Wis. They have three sons, Jake, Peter, and Daniel.
