Mary Burns of Mad Mary's business in Joseph was expected to break ground on its new building this week.

The store, which offers a wide range of gift and novelty items, opened in a rented 3,500 sq. ft. (including porches) log building on the north end of Main Street in June 2003.

Its new 5,800 sq. ft. home will be partially built on the vacant lot in the middle of town, which housed an outdoor stage for theatrical productions for many years. The next-door vacant building most recently used by a bicycle rental building has been tore down to make room for the expanded Mad Mary's store.

Burns said she plans to add an old-fashioned soda fountain to her business in the new location.

Before opening Mad Mary's, Burns operated a craft store, Country Cottage, at Wallowa Lake for a dozen years. She kept that store open for the past two summers, but plans to now consolidate the two businesses.

Mad Mary's, which has four employees, is open seven days a week all year. Burns expects it to move to its new building early next summer.
