At about 3 a.m. on Sunday, June 15, a hit and run crash was reported at Greg Oveson's residence at 71849 Dougherty Loop Road north of Wallowa. A 1993 Ford F205 pickup was left at the scene after knocking down a power pole, striking a fence, then coming to rest against a large cottonwood tree.

The driver, who fled on foot, was later identified as James Jones of Monument who reportedly entered the yard in his pickup at a high rate of speed.

Eva Oveson said she was grateful that the errant vehicle did not hit any of five cars or a backhoe parked in the vicinity. The Ovesons, who need electricity to operate their well, were without power and water for 30 hours.
