A six-unit motel is being built at the South Wallowa Lake intersection of Power House Road and Mt. Howard Lane. Constructed by owner Richard Langrell of Baker City, the opening of the new business is not anticipated until late summer 2004.

Langrell's efforts to build the motel have been slowed by the planning process and the proximity of power lines, but he is now hard at work, and plans to have the building enclosed this week.

In October of 1999 Langrell received a conditional use permit from the Wallowa County Planning Department for an eight-unit motel. Concerns expressed by Pacific Power have forced Langrell to compromise on the number of units, forcing him to alter his design to a one-story structure in the back half of the building closest to the power lines in question.

Mike Gavin of Pacific Power's Walla Walla, Wash., office has been working with Langrell on the power line issue and says his interest is in meeting National Electrical Safety Code standards.

The structural permit for the motel was granted by the Oregon State Building Codes division in 2001.
