The 27th annual Wallowa County Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 15. Bird watchers of all skill levels are invited to participate. All those interested are asked to meet at the Old Town Cafe on Main Street in Joseph between 6 and 7 a.m. for breakfast or at 7 a.m. for a short meeting in order to divide the territory and split into small groups.

For more information, contact Joe Minato at 432-5032 or online at jrminato@eoni.com. First timers are welcome and encouraged to participate but should call ahead for more details.

The count is being locally sponsored by the newly formed Wallowa Natural History Society. The Society is also hosting a pre-count practice bird watching activity on Sunday, Dec. 8. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at Fishtrap, 400 E. Grant St. in Enterprise at 8 a.m.

The public is invited to attend the practice whether or not they are participating in the official count.

The Wallowa County CBC is one of almost 2,000 such counts involving over 50,000 volunteers from all 50 states, every Canadian province, parts of Central and South America, Bermuda, the West Indies, and some Pacific islands. This year marks the 103rd anniversary of the original count held on Christmas Day in 1900.

The count is a collaborative project of the National Audubon Society and the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology.
