The local Oregon Mountain River Chapter is currently asking for financial assistance. "We are urging those who recently received appeals to give generously," Red Cross volunteer Jerry Perren said. "Those not on our mailing list are also asked to respond."

Donations will make it possible for the chapter to provide services to a 40,000 square mile area. For Wallowa County this includes building more responsive disaster assistance capabilities such as positioning a disaster response equipped trailer here.

Perren also emphasized growing national needs in response to the devastation on Florida caused by recent hurricanes. As of Sept. 8, in response to "Charlie" and "Frances," the Red Cross has opened 606 shelters (housing 282,284 people), served 4,680,959 meals, and provided tens of millions of dollars in direct assistance to affected families.

Call 426-4074 to become a Red Cross volunteer or for more information. Send checks to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 158, Enterprise. Please indicate on the check where funds are intended, locally or nationally.
