ENTERPRISE – A German dinner featuring Oregon Alpenfest’s official bratwurst and sauerkraut will be served on Thursday, May 9, as a fundraiser for Calli Miller of Wallowa, the Rotary Club of Wallowa County’s 2013-14 exchange student.

Calli, a sophomore at Wallowa High School, picked the dinner theme because she will be studying in Germany during her exchange starting in the fall.

The dinner is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the VFW Hall, 800 N. River St. in Enterprise. Doors open at 6 for a meet-and-greet with Calli including coffee and soft drinks. Stronger beverages will be available at the VFW bar.

There also will be German background music and, if anyone asks, a brief polka lesson with Chuck Anderson, Alpenfest’s alpenmeister.

Tickets at $10 are available from Calli, any Rotarian, members of the Interact Club at the high school and at Bennett Insurance in Enterprise. Tickets also will be available at the door.

Centerpiece of the dinner will be Joseph Trading Post bratwurst, the official sausage of Alpenfest, handcrafted at Mt. Joseph Family Foods in Joseph, which also makes Alpenfest sauerkraut using a traditional recipe from Maggie Vali of Vali’s Alpine Restaurant at Wallowa Lake.

Outgoing exchange students often stage fundraising events to help finance their exchanges, according to Judy Allen, chairwoman of the local Rotary Youth Exchange Program. For information:
