Former Enterprise student Payton Steinbeck, 15, died Monday morning from head injuries sustained while he was hookey-bobbing on a skateboard behind a pickup in Kalispell, Mont.
Steinbeck and eight or 10 other skateboarders were playing after school Thursday, Oct. 2, when the sophomore in high school grabbed a pickup tailgate as the pickup drove away. He fell on the back of his head on the pavement, crushing his brain stem.
He was rushed to a Kalispell hospital where he was placed on life supports and listed in grave condition. The life supports were removed Monday morning, Oct. 5.
Emergency workers said that a helmet probably would have saved his life.
Steinbeck lived in Enterprise until last summer when he moved with his parents Nathan and Klista Steinbeck to Kalispell where Nathan is a contracting superintendent. He leaves a twin sister named Kelsey. (See obituary on Page 2)
