Families and adults looking for wholesome vacation or educational experiences for themselves and/or their children this summer are invited to register for open enrollment events being offered at Wallowa Lake Camp & Retreat Center, a ministry offered by the United Methodist Church of Oregon and Idaho.

Programs focus on recreation and "connecting the Spirit of God with creation, community, and the arts." Special courses are offered in the creative, performing, and healing arts, cultural heritage, natural history, horsemanship and recreational opportunities; all integrated with a gentle, spiritually grounded experience. Quality meals featuring local produce and healthy options are included in the program fee. Lodging is optional for adult and family camps, and local participants may choose to commute.

Family vacation events take full advantage of the local recreational attractions around Wallowa Lake, museums, and creative arts. A special family camp offered in July, Hallowed Ground - Hawtnin Weetes, brings Nez Perce and other American Indian families together with non-Indian families to share "two cultures united in one spirit."

Quality Horse Camps for ages 10-18 provide campers with their own horse to ride and care for all week. Youth ages 13-16 gain specialized instruction in drawing, writing, theatrics, or choral music at Youth Expressions Camp. A northwest senior high retreat for Christian youth groups of all denominations is offered in August.

Adult education courses or retreats offer a variety of activities and workshops featuring natural and cultural history, and the creative, performing, and healing arts. A special focus on Lewis and Clark and the Nez Perce will be highlighted at several adult and family events this year. Some courses are eligible for college credit and teacher certification.

The camp has received a facelift in the past year with new cabins and remodeling inside the lodge, and new energy and enthusiasm for the camp's future is evident. Directors David and Miranda Lovegren, and Assistant Director/Head Cook Wendy White, look forward to their second season at the camp. Tyler and Katie Webster from Enterprise round out the service staff. The camp relies on many volunteers throughout the summer, and local volunteers are needed to help in the kitchen and around the camp grounds. Contact any of the staff at the camp for information about the camp or volunteering: 432-1271.
