Betty Jane Winters died at her home in Eugene on Oct. 27, 2016 at age 73. The cause of death was congestive heart failure.
She was born June 3, 1943 in La Grande to Lillie and Elmer Trump. She graduated from Wallowa High School in 1961 and married Gary Winters on July 10 that same year. The newlyweds spent two years in Hinesville, Ga., while Gary was stationed at Fort Stewart. They came back to Oregon in 1963 with daughter Laurie and settled in the Willamette Valley, where Gary began a career with the Eugene Water and Electric Board.
In 1965, the couple purchased their forever home in south Eugene and soon grew the family to five, with the addition of daughter Andrea in 1966 and son Derek in 1968. Betty’s hobbies included gardening, needlecrafts, reading, puzzles and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was passionate about collectibles, with a special interest in Hallmark Ornaments, and was active with a local club for many years.
Betty had an eye for detail and enjoyed working as a bookkeeper, school cook and lingerie fitter. She was a breast cancer survivor and bravely dealt with several other health issues over the years. Traveling to northeastern Oregon to spend time with family was especially important to her, and she never let distance weaken the strong bonds she had with her parents and siblings.
Betty will be lovingly remembered by her children – Laurie (Shane) Byerly of Dayton, Ore.; Andrea (Ron) Hartman, and Derek Winters, both of Eugene; grandchildren Brandi (Zac) Hartman, Shelby Byerly, Travis Byerly and Hannah Hartman; and great-grandchildren Brooklyn and Hunter. In addition, she is survived and cherished by sisters Aleta Neal of Lostine, Barbara Asumendi of Nyssa, Ore., and Fredia McDonald of La Grande, along with brother Joseph Glenn (Martha) Breshears of Bessemer, Ala. Betty also leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and brother Charlie Rae.
