Emma Rose Newschwander, 81, of Tacoma, Wash., died March 25, 2004. She was born March 14, 1923, in Joseph to Fred and Ruby Shinn.
Mrs. Newschwander grew up near Wallowa Lake. She married Charles Newschwander in 1944, and together they raised four children in the Tacoma area. Especially during Chief Joseph Days, Emma enjoyed sharing the area where she grew up with family and friends, visiting the galleries, foundries and old friends. She was an active member of PEO, Tacoma Garden Club, Orthopedic Guild and the American Cancer Society. As part of her activities with the garden club, she left her mark as a master gardener at the Point Defiance Native Garden in Tacoma. She was known for kind and happy disposition that she was able to brighten others lives with.
Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Charles; children Peggy, Janet, Charles Jr. and Susan; siblings Priscilla Galloway and Ronn Shinn; nine grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Gibson; and a grandson, Charles Newschwander III.
A memorial service was held March 31, 2004, at the New Tacoma Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mary Bridge Children's Hospital in Tacoma.
