Erwin Neal Hafenstein, 72, died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002 at his home in Klamath Falls from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

He was born July 23, 1930, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Erwin Arthur and Eugenie Christine Neely Hafenstein.

After graduating from high school, Mr. Hafenstein attended Iowa State University for two years before enlisting in the Navy in 1951. After his discharge in 1954, he completed his college degree in forestry and went to work for the U.S. Forest Service. His first duty station was Enterprise, followed by a transfer to Klamath Falls in 1966, and then retirement after 31 years of service. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing, wildlife photography and computers.

Mr. Hafenstein is survived by his daughters and their spouses Linda and George Milligan of Albany, Dotha and Glen Canning of Corvallis, and Cynthia and Ken Hall of San Diego, Calif.; and eleven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
