Eugene (Gene) Murl Marr, 97, died while resting comfortably at Wallowa Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
Gene was born to Odell Marr and Effie Cole in Joseph.
He was a 1931 graduate of Joseph High School. After his graduation he worked for Pacific Power and Light as a lineman, sometimes checking lines from horseback. He remained with the company until retirement 45 years later.
He married Mildred Miller of Enterprise in 1939 and they had a son, Gary, in 1940.
After retirement, Gene and Mildred moved to Imnaha. They remained there until health concerns forced them to return to Enterprise. The last few years Gene resided at the Alpine House in Joseph.
He was a charter member and past Exalted Ruler of the Enterprise Elks BPOE 1829; a member of the Enterprise Volunteer Fire Department; a member of the Enterprise School Board and a member of the Wallowa County Wranglers (he designed the drills for this horse team).
Gene was a high school basketball referee in the 40's and remained an avid sports fan and loved high school, college and professional sports.
Gene also enjoyed his time as a hunter and packer and was active with Hells Canyon Mule Days as a long time volunteer, and as Grand Marshal for Chief Joseph Days. He was an enthusiastic horse trader.
Family recall him as a man who 'never met a stranger,' and lived life to the fullest.
He was preceded in death by his father Odell Marr, mother Effie Cole, wife Mildred Marr and longtime companion and friend Evelyn Playfair.
Gene is survived by his son, Gary Marr and his wife Carol; grandsons, Shane and his wife Shelley and Todd and his wife Heather; great grandchildren Dylan and Maci Marr; and cousin Merdith of Baker City.
A celebration of life is scheduled for 11 a.m. March 4 at Bollman Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at Enterprise Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Wallowa Valley Healthcare Foundation.
