Irene Herzog McFetridge, 90, died March 14, 2009 at the Wallowa Valley Care Center.

She was born Irene Mary Herzog, Jan. 7, 1916, to Henry and Mary Herzog on OK Gulch in Enterprise.

She grew up on several farms in Wallowa County including farms in OK Gulch, Elk Mountain, and Three Lakes.

Irene graduated from Enterprise High School and married Wayne McFetridge Oct. 21, 1936.

The couple lived on Upper Prairie Creek for several years before moving to the McFetridge Ranch near Enterprise.

Irene lived on the ranch for nearly 60 years. She and Wayne raised a family of nine children. The two older boys, Darrell and Larry, stayed on the ranch with their parents.

Irene was a devout Catholic. She enjoyed teaching catechism for many years and belonged to the altar society. She was also a member of the Cow Belles and was interested in all the happenings of Wallowa County.

She is remembered as a devoted wife who loved to help work cattle, garden, and raise flowers. She was known for preparing delicious dinners for hay crews and managing any emergency that arose.

The family recalls her has a gentle mother, grandmother and great-grandmother with a delightful sense of humor and recall enjoying her buttermilk pancakes, listening to her squeaky shoes coming and going down the hall, and playing games and cards with her.

She was preceded in death by her husband Wayne; two daughters, Mary Anna and Teresa; her parents; three brothers; and three sisters.

She is survived by her sister, Josephine Nielsen; sisters-in-law Marjorie Johnson and Betty Herzog; son-in-law David (Cathy) Barber; and her children, Darrell (Marlie) McFetridge, Larry (Davis) McFetridge, Evelyn McFetridge, Mike (Mary) McFetridge, Kay (Tom) Forest, David (Janet) McFetridge, and Sharon (Oscar) Ramos; 23 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

There will be a rosary on Thursday, March 19, at 7 p.m. at Bollman's Funeral Home. The funeral mass will be on Saturday, March 21, at 10 a.m. at St. Katherine's Catholic Church in Enterprise.
