John "Jack" Thorne of Wallowa died in Walla Walla, Wash. on Oct. 18, 2007. He was 77.

Mr. Thorne was born on April 20, 1930, in Cloquet, Minn. to Homer and Lucille Chapman Thorne. He grew up in Oregon City and Wallowa. He served in the U.S. Navy. In 1952, he married Mary Wiegand.

He worked as a papermaker and was an active union member. He was a member of the VFW, the NRA and the Church of Christ. He enjoyed hunting.

Mr. Thorne is survived by his wife Mary; sons John of Yelm, Wash. and James and wife, Debbi of Oregon City; sister Phyllis Steward of Wolf Creek; four grandchildren; four great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held Oct. 27 at 10 a.m. at the IOOF Hall in Wallowa. A potluck will follow the service.
