Margaret "Marge" Ann Hayes, 76, of Joseph, died after a short illness. She was born June 8, 1927, at Willow Lake, S. D. to James and Gertryde "Penny" Donley.

During WWII, Mrs. Hayes worked in the shipyards in Portland as a welder. In 1962 she moved to Wallowa County with her son Ronnie where she worked with local potato farmers Tom Butterfield, Doug Tippett and others. Marge married Leland Hayes in 1970 in Lewiston, Idaho, and the couple made their home in Joseph.

She enjoyed camping, fishing, spending time with her grandchildren and family, was an avid gardener, and enthusiatically followed professional basketball and baseball.

Survivors include her husband Leland; son and daughter-in-law Ronnie and Rene' Layton and grandchildren Mishelle, Jake, Derrek and Kayann Layton; and brothers Francis, Larry and Vince Donley. She was preceded in death by three infant daughters; her parents; sisters Jean Smith, Inez Dixon and Mary Fox; and brother James Donley.

Graveside services will be held Friday, March 19, at 1 p.m. at the Prairie Creek Cemetery in Joseph. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the giver's choice care of the Bollman Funeral Home.
