Mary Isabelle Rouse Hays, 91, of Baker City, died Jan. 6, 2003, at St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise. She was born in Unity to Michael and Maude Rouse on May 21, 1911.

She graduated from St. Francis Academy in Baker City, where she enjoyed art, music and women's basketball, and married Vernon E. "Beanie" Hays in 1934. After managing and owning grocery stores in Ontario and Enterprise, the couple went into ranching in Wallowa County, building a herd of horned Herefords from Dorrance stock bloodlines. Mrs. Hays returned to Baker City after her husband died in 1973. She will be remembered for her sense of humor and loving support, and she will be missed.

Mrs. Hays is survived by her daughter, Jo Ann Radinovich of John Day; sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Ella Mae Hays of Grants Pass, John Hays of Unity; Dan and Linda Hays of West Linn; and Dave and Angie Hays of Baker City; 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, an infant daughter, her parents, and two brothers.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Jan. 8 at St. Francis de Sales Cathedral with vault interment at Mount Hope Cemetery in Baker City. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association through Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St., Baker City, OR 97814.
