Verne H. Russell of Joseph, beloved husband, father and grandfather, died at Wallowa Memorial Hospital on Nov. 20, 2002, at the age of 82.
Verne was born on Jan. 8, 1920, in Joseph to Lee and Theresa Russell.
Mr. Russell spent all of his youth in Wallowa County before attending the University of Idaho. In 1941 he married Mary Daisley and moved to Seattle where he worked as an engineer for Boeing. After serving in the Army from 1944 to 1946, the Russells returned to Wallowa County and he began his 45-year tenure as a county employee as roadmaster, county surveyor and director of public works. In his spare time, he served as Joseph Chamber of Commerce president, mayor and on the Joseph School Board. In 1991, the Joseph Chamber honored Mr. Russell by naming him grand marshal for Chief Joseph Days.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Mary, at home; son and daughter-in-law Jim and Theresa Russell of Joseph; daughter and son-in-law Judy and Bill Ross of Joseph; grandchildren Teri Dierick of Juneau, Alaska, Tina Ross of Milton-Freewater, Tim Ross and his wife Kelly of Kent, Wash., Sam Russell of Joseph, Kristy Theabolt of Pullman, Wash., and Corey Theabolt of La Grande; sister Edna Roundy of Joseph; brother and sister-in-law Dan and Agnes Russell of Bellevue, Wash.; two great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and friends. Mr. Russell was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, George Russell.
The rosary was said Sunday at the Bollman Funeral Home and the funeral was at St. Katherine's Catholic Church on Monday, Nov. 25. Memorials may be made to the Wallowa Memorial Hospital or the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
