Walter L. Hammond, 68, passed away at Wallowa Memorial Hospital on Dec. 24.

He was born April 27, 1936 in Covington, Ga. to J.P. and Christine Hammond.

Hammond served in the United States Navy with a rank of E3. He was stationed in Stockton, Calif., at the Defense Logistics Agency, where he worked for 34 years.

Hammond was preceded in death by his wife, Emily Marie Berta of San Francisco, Calif. Later in life his companion was Judith Ann Carter of Enterprise.

Hammond is survived by his siblings Billy, Johnnie, Otis, Phillip, Martha and Gloria of Covington, Georgia; his children Linda Ann Houghton of Modesto, Calif.; Carol Ann Tencati of Tracy, Calif.; Nancy Ann Shaw of Jackson, Calif.; Phillip Edward Hammond of Spanaway, Wash.; Janis Ann Pierce of Mokelumne Hill, Calif.; and Joyce Ann Smith of Stockton, Calif.; and his grandchildren Jason, Jennifer, Nicole, Tyler, Patricia, Edward, Michael, Rachael, Joseph, Kimberly and Jordan.

A military service was held Dec. 30 at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Enterprise. Hammond was interred at his family plot in the Covington City Cemetery.
