Agent Harman sold $1,000 work of railroad tickets during December, which certainly shows that the people of Enterprise and vicinity are going some. Friday morning 33 tickets were sold.
The Wallowa County Woolgrowers Association met Monday ... and assessed one half cent a head on the 192,630 sheep in the county to continue the $1.50 bounty coyote scalps.
The Joseph Methodist people are planning for a new $4,000 church of brick or stone to be built this spring. Most of the money has been subscribed.

The year 1938 passed without any thrilling event of general importance or interest in Wallowa County. ... Construction of a large and well-equipped new fish hatchery was begun late in the year by the state game commission as the major new development of the year.
As a New Year's present to Wallowa County from some unnamed "friend," announcement came Sunday of a revival of the national park propaganda. The Portland Oregonian published a page article by Vinton E. Hall on "Hell's Canyon: American's New National Park?"
As Allan Wilson was returning to Snake River from a business to town last Wednesday, he spotted a big cougar at the foot of the saddle on the Snake River side. ... At the Saddle Creek Ranch, he and his brother rounded up their dogs and rifles and hastened back up the creek. ... The animal measured nine feet when stretched out on the ground at its extreme length.
JOSEPH - In Joseph, a big dance Saturday night ushered in the New Year joyously. ... A high wind also played pranks, blowing down part of the north and east walls of the city.

A blanket of polar air moved into Wallowa County from the arctic over the weekend and thermometers plummeted to 22 below zero Friday night and 27 below Saturday night. By Sunday, hundreds of motorists were stalled with cars that wouldn't start, and homeowners were flooding local plumbers with calls to thaw out frozen pipes and drains.
The first baby of the new year born at Wallowa Memorial Hospital was a girl, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hammond of Enterprise. Little Ginger Ann Hammond made her appearance at 4:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, weighing 7 lbs. 3 oz.
EDITORIAL - Reluctantly and painfully Wallowa County will move toward further consolidation of its schools in the year ahead. This trend has already reduced the number of operating school districts in the county from almost 100 to the present 16. ... Public hearings are being held over the county on a consolidation plan that envisions a continuation of separate schools, but under the direction of a central school district.

Extremely icy road conditions throughout Wallowa County Tuesday morning caused all three county school districts to extend their holiday vacation by one day. According to all superintendents, this is the first enforced closure because of road conditions in over 10 years.
In Wallowa County, the year 1983 brought a lessening of the recession, which has plagued the nation for the past two-and-a-half to three years. ... Internationally, much of the world is in an upheaval. The Middle East continues to be the world's hot spot, with Syria, Israel and Lebanon.
