March 3, 1904

Word reached town Tuesday announcing the death of Mrs. J.M. Simmons and infant son of Imnaha. She leaves a husband and nine children to mourn her loss.

PROMISE - Mrs. J.H. Fleshman's children have been very sick with whooping cough and colds, but are improving at present.

IMNAHA - Henry Weaver returned to his home near Joseph last week to do some work on the ranch. If Henry doesn't return there will be tears in someone's blue eyes. ... On their way home to the Park, Mssrs. Morgan and Beith with their brides stopped overnight at Hotel Imnaha and were the victims of a Charivari.

70 YEARS AGO

March 1, 1934

Results of the tests of Enterprise school pupils in their knowledge of natives woods, conducted by the Forest Service office on Visitor's day, were given out yesterday. ... Only one pupil, William Fletcher in the junior class, of the many taking the test, scored 100 percent.

JOSEPH - This is the season for moving. As usual there are a number of changes in tenant farming. E.P. Heger moves to the Mrs. Hazel Berland farm. Adolph Nuxoll takes possession of the Heger place. Lon Galbraith is to farm the Winston Bros. ranch which was vacated last fall by Fred Beaudoin, who moved with his sheep to Snake River.

The history of transportation in Wallowa County was sketched by F.D. McCully in a talk before the Lions club Tuesday night at the Gotter hotel. ... He took his first contract to haul the mail to Wallowa County in 1882, the route running from Summerville to Joseph.

PRAIRIE CREEK - Several from the creek attended the dance at Roy Isley's on Little Sheep creek Saturday night. ... Luther and Leona Thornberg, Virginia Peal and Violet Varney attended the sub-tournament at La Grande, returning home Saturday.

50 YEARS AGO

March 4, 1955

The Enterprise Lions club voted Tuesday night to sponsor a full-time recreation program for the summer months and authorized an appropriation of $250 toward the cost. A committee will contact other organizations to raise a total of $900 to pay the salary of a full-time recreation director.

County judge Dean Erwin announced the reading of an agreement with the state highway commission whereby the state will take over and maintain the road from the Wallowa Lake Lodge south to the PP&L Co. power plant.

The Enterprise FFA boxing squad closed out their season last Saturday night by trouncing Halfway. Boys winning bouts were Jim Butner, Gilbert Mathews and Gary Patterson. Earning a draw were Fred Bornstedt, Scott Eldridge and Harlan Milsap.

EDITORIAL - The capitulation of Secretary of the Army Robert Stevens to Senator McCarthy, apparently after getting his orders from President Eisenhower himself, is the latest in a long list of shameful instances of knuckling down to the dictatorial tactics of the Wisconsin witch hunter.

Wallowa is the place to go for Friday night fun and excitement this week as 18 acts featured in the Lions Club-sponsored Wallowa Talent Show begin vying for a multitude of prizes in the WHS gym at 7:30 p.m. Bud Sanders will be master of ceremonies for the event, inspired by the very successful "Gong Show" held in Wallowa last year.
