To the Editor:

Senator David Nelson is retiring from the legislature after more than 15 years of service. He was a great fighter for the needs and interests of his constituents, and he will be missed.

There are two Republican candidates running to replace him: Bill Hansell and Maryl Graybeal Featherstone. Hansell is a longtime Umatilla County Commissioner. His government resume is long, with several fancy-sounding titles and appointments.

So why am I voting for Maryl? Because she has what Hansell lacks – private sector experience!

She has worked hard to become a successful businesswoman. I don’t know about you, but I think we need someone with real private sector experience, who knows the burdens of taxes and regulations, who has hired and fired employees, and has signed paychecks, to clean up Salem.

Government spending is out of control, so why on earth would we send a government bureaucrat to change the course? In contrast, Maryl has done well in business, and has the skills and drive to get our house back in order. I hope you join me and support Maryl to be our next senator.
