My wife and I were driving down from our family property up on the Lostine River Road. We had just passed through Lostine, when I noticed steam coming out from the hood of the car. I looked at the temperature gauge of the car and, yes indeed, it was red lining!

We immediately pulled over to the side of the road and popped the hood, hot steam billowing all around. Within five minutes, two vehicles pulled up beside and asked, "What can we do to help?"

Nancy, my wife, and I looked at each other and grinned "Oh! We have it under control, but thank you." We did a jerry rig job and limped the seven odd miles to Wallowa.

What was amazing is that we had our hazard lights on and ALL the other drivers were respectful of us creeping along the valley floor. My thanks to the young man who followed us, on his own initiative, all the way to Goebbels gas station in Wallowa to ensure our safe arrival.

The reason for this letter to you is that, amongst this time of strife and angst, it is truly wonderful to know that you can count on the folks in Wallowa County to always help those who are in need of assistance.

Thank you from the couple in the golden, ageing Volvo station wagon!
