To the Editor:

All my life I have been respectful of the opinions of others, taught to listen to both sides of an issue, and be polite to those I disagree with. Over the years this has been so firmly ingrained that when I come across someone who holds a view opposite that of my own, I chalk it up to either they or I do not have the full story.

The current and prevailing political climate in this country, wherein the majority of our elected representatives put their own self-interest, and those of their political party, ahead of the best interests of the country and their constituents, has forced me to change my approach to disagreements with those I disagree with.

When I have broached what I see are problems with the current president’s policies, and those of members of his administration, I am called a racist. My views on subjects like securing the border with Mexico, handling the illegal immigration problem, gun control, job creation, and unemployment are all relegated by opponents to these views as uninformed, racist, or unintelligent. Despite the fact that I have politely listened to their arguments, blatant misrepresentation of the facts, and generally idiotic statements of non-facts, I am not afforded the same courtesy by them.

From this point on, I have decided that “enough is enough.” If I have a view that differs from anyone on issues that I consider important locally, regionally or nationally, including gun control, illegal immigration, job creation, etc., there will be no accommodation on my part to consider their opposing views. I will not attempt to understand why they believe as they do. I will not be slow to let them know that they are so woefully ignorant and stupid to the point where I feel it is a total waste of my time to attempt to reason with them.

If this hurts their feeling, or injures their self-worth, too bad. My feelings and self-worth have been treated by them as an expendable commodity up till now. That is over and done with. If, for instance, I feel that your view on the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution, is wrong, I am going to let you know that I firmly believe you are an ignorant and uninformed traitor and undeserving of any of the protections afforded by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Likewise on any other issues facing the country. If you don’t like it, tough.
