I grew up in Wallowa County, a direct descendant of James Haun, a Wallowa County pioneer. Since graduating from Wallowa High School, I have spent many years in more liberal areas of Oregon. And I have come to this conclusion. Even an inch left of center is far more left than it ever has been. In fact "center" is a progressive movement. Why? We are too many generations beyond the Mayflower, colonies, and westward pioneers like James Haun. Our lives are now filled with ready made food, ready made entertainment, designer families, and ready made careers. We no longer suffer through the toil of making our own way, making our own success, and pulling ourselves up by our own bootstraps when we fall. Now, all you have to do is be part of a "group" to get all the help you need because someone else will straighten your road for you. In a word, we are too lazy to be conservatives anymore. There may be a silver lining to this coronavirus. It may lead us back to the individual effort needed to be a success, all on your own, with your own smarts, and with your own blood, sweat, and tears. It is eternally true that hardship often improves the man, or woman.
