To the Editor:
We would like to add our voices in support of the re-election of Senator Jeff Merkley.
One of our major reasons for supporting Senator Merkley is because of his actions taken out of concern for the health of all Oregonians. His support of the Affordable Care Act has resulted in an increase in the number of residents who can now see a doctor. Dr. Elizabeth Powers, Winding Waters Family Physician and Surgeon, recently stated that they have seen an increase in the number of Medicaid patients from 800 to 1,500 in the last few months.
A study released in September conducted by researchers at Oregon Health & Science University and the Oregon Health Authority shows that the number of uninsured Oregonians fell by 63% from June 2013 to June 2014. This study found that 95% of Oregonians now have health insurance coverage. This is pretty remarkable given the glitches that occurred initially.
Finally, on a personal level, our daughter has never been able to afford health insurance on her own because of the cost and a pre-existing condition. She now has health insurance for the very first time at 42 years of age.
Senator Merkley’s continued support of health care, and his support for more nurses to help provide this care is important to all of us. In addition, his strong support for the Violence Against Women Act is critical to all Oregon women. We urge you to vote, and to support Senator Merkley.
